La Citadelle de Blaye

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : France's Citadelle de Blaye is a fortress on the Garonne River in western France. Seen in this drone video by AirVuz contributor DRHON-EL, the fortification was built (on the foundations of a medieval era structure) in the late 17th century under the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Situated on the right bank of one of the estuary of one of France's most important waterways, the fortress was built to protect Bordeaux, an important port city located a bit upstream. The fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

I present to you a flight over the "Citadelle de Blaye". The "Citadelle de Blaye", overlooking the Gironde estuary, is located in the commune of Blaye, in the north of the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region. The citadel is a 25-hectare military complex built between 1685 and 1689 by military engineer François Ferry, under the supervision of Vauban. Several elements of the medieval fortifications have been preserved in the new complex, including the Château des Rudel (12th century), the Porte de Liverneuf (13th century) and the Tour de l'Éguillette (15th century). The citadel was listed as a historic monument in 2009 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
