Kennecott Stack and the Great Salt Lake
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Contributor and drone pilot Weatherman created this amazing aerial view of Utah's Great Salt Lake as well as its most prominent man-made landmark: the gigantic Kennecott Garfield Smelter Stack. Known as "the stack", it's one of the world's largest chimney structures, standing 370 meters (just over 1.2k ft.) above the surface. Built in 1974, the chimney is part of the gigantic Kennecott copper smelter, which refines copper ore from the nearby Bingham Canyon mine, the world's largest open pit mine.

Kennecott’s Garfield Smelter Stack stands 1,215 feet high, on the north side of the Oquirrh Mountains and next to the Great Salt Lake. The foothills are very rugged, with vertical thrusting of the rock layers. We fly over these protrusions to find the smoke stack, and we also see its proximity to the Great Salt Lake.
