The mountain, which has a maximum elevation of just over 8.6k meters (just over 28.2k ft.) is situated in the country's Gilgit-Baltistan territory, near the border with China. Part of the Karakoram chain, K2 is considered the world's deadliest mountain in terms of the number of lives lost relative to the number of people who have successfully scaled the peak.
