João Pessoa is the capital of and the largest city in Paraíba, one of the nine state which make up the official Northeastern region of this giant South American country. The city sits at the mouth of the Paraíba do Norte River on the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in the late 1600's by the Portuguese, underwent a period of Dutch control during the middle of the following century.
