The town lies along the River Gauja, the only major river of Latvia which begins and ends in the country. The town is part of the municipality of Smiltene in the Vidzeme region, which covers the northeastern corner of the country. The video features extensive footage of the town's two main landmarks: the 19th century Gaujiena Palace, and the ruins of the 13th century Gaujiena Castle.
