Fashinada in Perast

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner sinaysky brings us this excellent drone video of a centuries-old festival in the village of Perast, Montenegro. The Fashinada is held on July 22 every year on the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, a tiny artificial island just west of the village in Kotor Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea on Montenegro's northern coastline. During Fashinada, which dates back almost 600 years, participants throw rocks into the sea, the method by which the tiny islet was created during medieval times.

22th july 2024 marked the 573rd time this ancient custom was celebrated. At sunset, a beautiful procession of boats, with locals singing folk songs, journeyed to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks. They tossed stones to fortify this man-made island. In 2013 Montenegro recognized Fashinada as a protected intangible cultural asset.
