Coatzacoalcos means in Nahuatl 'place where the snake hides'. Its name is due to an ancient legend that tells that in the year 947.3 Quetzalcóatl arrived in this city and aboard a raft he sailed across the river until he was lost on the horizon with the promise of returning one day.
