Bursfelde Abbey

The abbey was founded 1093 and the western church built at that time. Around 40 years later the eastern church was completed, another 45 years later the towers. The wall paintings and the windows tracery are from 1450. The abbey was abandoned in 1672 and the lands leased off. Parts are converted to a manor house. Since 1828 a theology professor from the University of Göttingen is appointed as abbot. The towers were rebuilt in 1901. From 1978 on it is run as a place for religious meetings.
