Guanajuato City is the capital of the eponymous state near the geographic center of Mexico.  Situated in a mountain valley, the city was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish, and was closely associated with gold mining.  Guanajuato later played an important role in the struggle for Mexican independence which broke out in the early 19th century.  Later still, it was at the epicenter of the French intervention in Mexico in the mid-19th century.  See the historic city from above in this excellent drone video by AurelBaud.
