While drone hobbyists are constantly trying to find new and creative ways to utilize their drones, Auburn University may have just taken the cake.
Prior to the start of the game against Texas A & M, the Auburn Tigers football team used a drone disguised as an Auburn helmet, instead of their customary "War Eagle", to drop the game ball to Aubie the Tiger, Auburns mascot.
The DJI S900 drone carried the game ball from one end zone to midfield, then dropped it to Aubie from 50 feet in the air. Aubie showed off his punt return skills with a perfect catch on the field, then handed the ball off to the ref to get the game started.
The drone is owned and operated by Auburn Universities Unmanned Aircraft Systems Training Program, which was the first program to receive authorization from the FAA to operate unmanned aircraft in April of 2015.
Sports and drones continue to become more synonymous as technology continues to improve. Perhaps our next Super Bowl will utilize drones in some capacity.
