The Great Wall is a series of fortifications built in the mountains surrounding the Chinese heartland for protection against the steppe nomad to the north and west. Construction began in the 7th century BC and continued intermittently for centuries, reaching its current extent during the Ming Dynasty that rules China from 1368-1644.
