The Best of Italy from the Sky

Top AirVuz contributor and pilot Alessio Tricarico won the Drone Video of the Week contest in early December, 2021 with this fantastic two-year reel of drone footage from Italy.  The video features the following locations, in order of appearance: the alpine Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee) in the province of South Tyrol; Trevi Fountain in Rome; the great fortress of Rocca Calascio in the Apennine Mountains in Abruzzo; the Colosseum of Rome; the Apennine massifs of Gran Sasso and Mt. Terminillo; the Dolomite Mountains; and Campo Imperatore.  

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor Jackanda brings us this excellent highlight reel from Italy. The video features beautiful aerial sequences from all over this beautiful and fascinating country, including the Dolomite Mountains in the northern part of the country, hilltop estates in Tuscany, the iconic lighthouse on Giglio Island, and the Amalfi Coast. The highlight though is at the :30 mark, where it looks like a bird went after his drone while flying over the Beseno fortress in the (northern) Trentino province.  

Top first person view (FPV) drone pilot druno put together this incredible compilation of his best FPV shots.  Filmed across Italy, highlights include FPV flyover of ancient ruins sites (including a rare fly-through of the Colosseum in Rome), a brief but amazing shot of a "personal quadcopter" racing a Ferrari sports car (at the :28 mark), a fly-under of a Mercedes truck (:35), a shot of the famous Duomo in Florence (:38), an epic skim long a mountain ridge (:48), a giant music concert (1:06), and more.  

Take an aerial tour of Italy in this fantastic DVOW nominated piece by @DronDuilio.  The video opens with an excellent shot of the famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge over the River Arno in Florence, followed by a view of the St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.  At the :20 mark, you'll see the magnificent Castle Maniaci in Syracuse on the island of Sicily, and at :28 a great shot of the iconic Amalfi Coast.  Other highlights include the ancient town of Matera (:40), the striped tower and Duomo of Siena (:53), Rome's Victor Emmanuel II Monument (1:30), and more.

As Italy showed tentative signs that the deadly Covid-19 pandemic had peaked in the country, Drone Video Award winner Druno put together this inspiring collection of some of his aerial footage from across the great country.  A masterpiece which reminds us what beauty awaits when the country re-opens for tourism, the video will take you over some of Italy's most spectacular and iconic scenery.  Some of the featured locations include Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples, Sicily, the Dolomite Mountains, and much more.  

Ravaged by the worldwide Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, Italy went into a virtual national quarantine in mid-March, 2020. The emergency actions, desperately needed to stem an outbreak claiming hundreds of lives a day, effectively closed one of the world's most beautiful countries to international and even domestic travelers. To help us all remember what awaits when the epidemic recedes, new AirVuz contributor Ale_headshot brings us this wonderful aerial collage of Italy before the epidemic took hold here. This video won DVOW in March 2020.

In the late Winter of 2020, the spreading Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic pushed Italy into its worst crisis since World War II.  By the third week of March, Italy had lost nearly 5,000 people to the virus - the most of any country.  With the country more or less completely locked down, award-winning contributor Mauro Pagliai put together this moving video of some of his best footage from across his great nation.  From St. Peters Basilica in Rome to the Apennine Mountains of Abruzzo, his video stands as a tribute to the stricken country.

Check out this amazing aerial tour of Florence, Italy by top AirVūz contributor Alta Movie srl.  The video opens with an excellent shot of the Ponte Vecchio, one of the world's most famous bridges, which crosses the Arno River in the heart of the Tuscan capital.  From there you'll fly past the great tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, followed by the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the adjacent Giotto's Bell Tower, concluding with some night shots of the city. As Italy became the epicenter of the deadliest outbreak of the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic in late March, 2020, top AirVuz contributors began putting together highlight reels of their best drone footage from the stricken country.  Case in point is this magnificent piece by T.E.S.T. Srls, a top commercial drone piloting company which is based in the Tuscany region.  Featuring footage from the Pedmont, Lazio, Tuscany, and Sicily regions, the video celebrates the astonishing creativity of Southern Europe's largest country.

Check out some spectacular aerial views of Italy in this fantastic drone footage compilation from AirVuz contributor and pilot CG Films.  The video features footage from two regions of the country.  The first is the Dolomite Mountains in the northeast; here you'll be treated to shots of spots such as the alpine Lake Braies and Dobbiaco and Monte Crystalllo.  The second area filmed is the Campania region in the southwest; here you'll see footage of Cervati, Alburni, and Vesole Mountains, the commune of Senerchia, and the town of Palinuro.

Top AirVuz contributor and pilot Mauro Sciambi brings us this marvelous drone video from wintertime Italy.  The video opens with some excellent shots of mountain roads, their hairpin curves partially concealed by winter fog.  At the :35 mark, there's a great view of some cows congregated on a plain in front of some mountains, followed by an aerial view of an iconic mountain town.  Well worth a watch, this video was picked as a Finalist for the AirVuz Drone Video of the Week contest in March, 2021.  

Contributor Funk Design brings us this stunning drone video of Italy's Lake Garda.  The largest lake in Italy, Lago di Garda covers parts of three provinces in the Trentino-Alto-Adigio, Lombardy, and Veneto Regions.  The video opens with a shot of the town of Garda on the lake's eastern shore, and at the :10 mark you'll see the mouth of the Tarca River at the lake's northern end.   Starting at the 1:00 mark, you'll see the castle of Masceline, followed by the Sirmio Peninsula (including the Scaligero Castle) at the lake's southern base.

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner denisbarbas brings us this inspiring video from the mountains of northern Italy.  The video features incredible aerial footage from some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in Europe, including verdant meadows, towering limestone peaks, gushing waterfalls, and shimmering lakes.  The narrator of the video reminds us that life is a journey and that traveling is one of the deepest forms of personal expression.  This video was a Drone Video of the Week Finalist in August, 2021.

Contributor AndyOleck returns to AirVuz after five years with this fantastic trip drone video from Italy.  Shot with a DJI Air 2S in September, 2022, the video opens with shots of the Amalfi Coast, a stretch of coastline on the Sorrentine Peninsula just south of Naples.  Then it's on to Florence, the great Renaissance city which is the capital of the region of Tuscany, followed by some views of the fabled rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside.  The video concludes with some great shots over the Grand Canal in Venice.

Multiple Drone Video of the Week nominee and winner Mauro Pagliai created this remarkable aerial film of Italy's capital city of Rome, an early epicenter in the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. In this incredible production, this talented aerial cinematographer reveals the gentle re-awakening of the historic city from the quarantining and lockdown measures enacted due to the devastating outbreak. His incredible edit of these slowly filling streets was not surprisingly crowned as the Drone Video of the Week winner in July 2020. 

New contributor denisbarbas earned a Drone Video of the Week Finalist spot in this inspiring travel piece from northern Italy.  Much of the footage was captured in the Dolomite Mountains, a sub-chain of the Northern Limestone Alps which covers a parts of several northeastern provinces.  At about the 1:30 mark, you'll see the Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona, a church built into the side of a cliff near the city of Verona.  At about the 3:00 mark, you'll see the Scalliger Castle in Sirmione, near the southern end of Lake Garda. 

Prepare to be astounded by this magnificent drone video of the Italian island of Sicily, compliments of two-time DVA winner Timelab.pro. The video, which mixes footage from a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone with ground footage, features shots of some of the highlights of the largest island in the Mediterranean. Highlights include aerials of the Castle Maniaci and the Greek Theater ruins in the ancient city of Syracuse, and the magnificent Palermo Cathedral in the capital city. This video was a DVOW nominee in August, 2019.

Top AirVuz contributor CG Films secured another Drone Video of the Week Finalist spot with this excellent video from the Apulia region of southeastern Italy.   The video opens with shots from Polignano a mare, a seaside town which is part of the Metropolitan City of Bari.  Then it's on to the beach of Torre dell'Orso, the sea stacks of Sant'Andrea, Punta Palascia, and Otranto.  The last stop is the famous "white city" of Ostuni, which is located a few mi/km inland from the Adriatic in the province of Brindisi.  

Check out this stunning DVOW nominated video from Bologna, Italy, compliments of Jackanda.  Featuring stunning aerial footage of the city and its surrounding hills, the video was taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, when social distancing measures left the streets of the ancient Emilia-Romagna capital city virtually empty.  The ER region, which covers much of north-central Italy, was particularly hard-hit during the pandemic; only the Piedmont and Lombardy regions recorded more infections and deaths.  

Check out these stunning DVOW nominated film of Italy's Amalfi Coast, compliments of top AirVuz contributor and pilot CG Films.  The coastline consists of a series of towns on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Sorrento, one of the provinces of the southern Campania region.   The westernmost of these towns is Positano, while the easternmost of the chain is called Vietri sul Mare and is just west of Salerno at the base of the peninsula.  Since 1997, the towns of the Amalfi Coast have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  

Multiple Drone Video of the Week/Month Winner BashirAbuShakra brings us this stunning drone video from the Dolomite Mountains in northeastern Italy.  The video footage was captured with a DJI Mavic Pro 3 over the course of a seven day solo trek through the mountains, which are part of the Southern Limestone Alps and which cover parts of several provinces in the Trentino-Alto-Adigio and Veneto regions.  It includes some epic shots of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) massif, on the border of the South Tyrol and Belluno provinces.  

Aerial cinematographer Mauro Pagliai says he has an obsession with time that leads him to create videos like this - lucky us! Shot entirely on a DJI Mavic 2 drone (other than the intro and closing shots of his pup, Logan) the Drone Video Award winner gives a master class in Waypoint flying and hyper-lapses. The magnificent sunsets and sunrises of the countryside of Central Italy, busy streets of Rome surrounding the Coliseum, and more make this Drone Video of the Week Winner quite the treat. 

Check out this stunning drone tour of the Liguria region of Italy, compliments of brand-new AirVuz contributor LevanteDrones.  One of the country's 20 official regions, Liguria lies along the country's northwestern coastline on the Ligurian Sea, an inlet of the Mediterranean.  The video includes footage from across the region, ranging from the great port city of Genoa (the home of Christopher Columbus), the Cinque Terre region in the heart of the Italian Riviera, and more.

AirVuz contributor antoncha brings us this amazing DVOW nominated film from a trip to Italy before the country was virtually shut down by the Covid-19 pandemic.  The video features footage from the following locations:  (1) the town of Pitigliano in southern Tuscany, (2)  the nearby springs of Terme di Saturnia, (3) the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta in the Tuscan city of Siena, (4) the Tuscan seaside town of Forte Dei Marmi, and (5)-(6) the idyllic towns of Vernazza and Portofino, two of the Cinque Terre towns of the Italian Riviera in Liguria.

Award-winning content creator and drone pilot Mauro Pagliai created this magnificent piece from the Apennine Mountains of south-central Italy.  The video features some spectacular timelapse sequences from the Gran Sasso d'Italia massif, home of the highest peak in the entire Apennine chain: Corno Grande, which has a maximum elevation of 2.9k meters above sea level (around 9.55k ft.).  You'll also see some nice shots of the Rocca Calascio, the highest of the Apennine fortresses.  

Prepared to be amazed by this stunning drone video from the great Italian city of Siena by DVOW nominee Mauro Pagliai.  A promotional piece for the Siena International Photography Awards, the video will take you over this cultural treasure and UNESCO World Heritage site, which is situated in central Tuscany.  You will be treated to spectacular aerial views of some of Siena's most well-known sites, including the Siena Cathedral, which dates to the 12th century; the Piazza del Campo, the Palazzo Salimbeni, and more. 

Milan is the largest city in northern Italy and the second largest overall after Rome.  It's the capital of Lombardy, a region which is home to about one in six Italians and consistently has been the dynamo of the Italian economy (and one of the most important in the EU).  While Rome is Italy's political and cultural capital, Milan is its business and financial capital.  Dronescapes by Atellani treats us to this stunning aerial overview of Milano, including footage of La Scala di Milano, the Unicredit Tower, Citylife Milano, and more.

All great things take time. So was the case for drone pilot Signo11, who took two years worth of his best footage to create this stunning aerial collection of the Italian Alps. The cinematographer will float over the snowcapped peaks at sunrise, occasionally capturing wildlife like horses in his frame. He’ll also take moments of stillness, slowly panning over one of the range’s many lakes and forests. It's a breathtaking piece that was well worth the wait and was a DVOW Finalist in May, 2019.

Take in these stunning drone views of Italy's Calabria region, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot FSociety.  Calabria appears on a map as the "toe" of the "boot" of the Italian Peninsula.  It has long coastlines along the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north and the Ionian Sea to the south, both of which are considered large inlets of the Mediterranean Sea.  About 90% of its interior area is covered by hills or mountains, including the lower (southernmost) reaches of the Apennine Mountains chain.  

Contributor, drone pilot, and former Drone Video of the Week winner msember created this stunning drone video from the mountains of northern Italy.  Much of the video was shot around the Dolomite Mountains, a sub-chain of the Southern Limestone Alps which runs across much of the Trentino-Alto-Adigio region as well as parts of the neighboring region of Verona. The video also features some great footage of Lake Como, the famous freshwater body in the foothills of the Alps in the Lombardy region.  

Top conrtributor Haussmannvisuals, profiled in a December, 2018 Drone Dish segment, created this stunning drone video of the island of Stromboli, just off the coast of Sicily.  One of the Aeolian Islands which sit between Sicily and the Italian mainland in the Tyrrhenian Sea, it's home to one of the country's three active volcanoes.  Said volcano is on full display here in its state of near-constant minor eruption, along with other beautiful sites like a lighthouse topped islet just offshore.     

Check out these stunning aerial views from around Italy, compliments of top contributor dronerditaly.  The video uses some amazing color-grading of footage from across three of the country's regions: (1) the Val d'Aosta region in the heart of the Alps Mountains, along the border with Switzerland; (2) the Liguria region, which lies in the northwestern part of the country, along the Ligurian Sea (an extension of the Mediterranean); and (3) the Emilia-Romagna region, which lies opposite the Apennine Mountains from Tuscany.

Contributor alex_avdev created this spectacular drone video showing two of the most storied regions of Italy.  The first is the Tuscany region, which occupies a portion of west-central Italy north of Rome.  The fabled land was the birthplace of the Renaissance and is famous for its gently rolling hills dotted with walled cities and wineries.  The other spot featured is Cinque Terra.  This is a series of five towns along the Ligurian coast (aka the Italian Riviera) immediately to the north of Tuscany.  

The Italian countryside is home to some of the most beautiful and historic castles in the world.  In this beautiful compilation, AirVuz contributor and drone pilot dronerditaly, showcases some of the country's most spectacular castles.  Watch it and you will appreciate the range of Italian castles, from luxurious chateaus in the valleys of northern Italy to seaside castles like Castel dell'Ovo on the Gulf of Naples and mountaintop masterpieces like Fénis Castle in the A'osta Valley.

Sicily's Mt. Etna is one of the earth's most active volcanoes.  In the 1990s, it was added to the list of 'Decade Volcanos' by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). This project was initiated by the United Nations to prepare for disasters created by volcanoes; Etna was selected due to its recent activity and the risk presented to nearby residents.  In this aerial video, drone pilot Haussmannvisuals provides a rare look inside the colossal landmark.

MV Agusta is one of the most storied names in motorcycles.  Based in Milan, the company collaborated with two-time Drone Video Award winner Timelab.pro to produce this magnificent piece from the mountains of northern Italy.  You'll aerially follow an Agusta bike through some of the world's most beautiful scenery, and then do things no bike will ever do, like soar through the peaks of the Dolomites, or skim over shimmering alpine lakes.  Filmed in the Fall, the video is expertly color-graded in the vaunted Timelab style.  

Top AirVuz contributor used a DJI Mini 4 Pro drone to create this stunning aerial tour of Venice, Italy.  The video opens with an epic shot of the St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco), which is the aesthetic heart of Venice.  At the :16 mark, you'll see the Rialto Bridge, the oldest of the spans across the Grand Canal, followed by the tiny island of San Giorgio Maggiore.  Other highlights include the church of Santa Maria della Salute (:58), a stunning shot of St. Mark's Campanile (1:30), and more. 

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand new contributor CG Films brings us this marvelous drone video reel from Italy.  Most of the video was shot within the province of Salerno, the southernmost of the five provinces of the Campania region; Salerno locations include Positano, Cilento, Acciaroli, Ascea, Punta Licosa, Palinuro, Dam alento, and Paestum.  The video also includes footage from the region of Molise in southwestern Italy as well as from the Dolomite Mountains in the northern province of Trentino.

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner denisbarbas used the new DJI Mavic 3 drone to create this stunning aerial video of Italy's Dolomite Mountains.  With its Hasselbad 4/3 sensor and telephoto lens, the new DJI quad is a perfect platform for filming some of the world's most spectacular alpine landscapes.  The Dolomite Mountains are part of the Southern Limestone Alps.  Known for their spectacular rocky peaks more than for their sheer altitude, the Dolomites are spread across several provinces of northeastern Italy.  

Top contributor and former DVOW Finalist Signo11 hit another bulls-eye with this jaw-dropping piece from the Italian Alps.  Shot with a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone, the film uses sequences captured in all four seasons.  Opening with a stunning shot over a lake encircled by Fall colors, the video then takes you up into the snow-covered peaks of the Lombardy and Trentino-Alto-Adige regions.  Then you'll be taken over the area's famous alpine valleys during the spring and summer months, closing with some incredible wintertime shots.   

Contributor by_ewold used a DJI Mavic Air and Panasonic and GoPro cameras to record the highlights of his week-long adventures in the Italian island of Sicily.  The DVOW nominated video does a fantastic job of bringing out the natural, architectural, and human beauty of the Mediterranean's largest island. It includes footage of some of Sicily's lesser-known spots, such as the town of Noto in the Syracuse province near the island's southeastern tip, and the town of Modica to its west, in the Ragusa province. 

See the large Italian island of Sardinia in this stunning, clear drone video by pilot DJphotography. This short piece highlights what the Mediterranean island is best known for - it’s crystal clear, aquamarine waters; exotic, luxury boats; countless semi-hidden coves, and rocky shoreline interspersed with beautiful beaches. The final shot in this short piece is also noteworthy because of its beauty; the ancient buildings looking off into the pink sunset make you feel like you’re being taken back in time.

Prepare to be amazed by this aerial video from the ancient Italian town of Matera by AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Galax.  One of the oldest continuously settled cities in the world, Matera is located on the banks of the Gravina River in the Basilicata region near the "ankle" of Peninsular Italy.  The well-preserved town has appeared as a filming location for numerous feature movies, "playing the role" of Jerusalem in the 2004 epic the Passion of the Christ and later starring in the 2021 James Bond movie No Time to Die.

As the title suggests, you'll get a marvelous "taste of Italy" in this piece by former Drone Video of the Week Finalist ViDeo Creator jP.  The video opens with a brilliant shot of the city of Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance, before cutting to the canals of Venice.   Combining drone and ground camera footage, the video will take you to the famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge over the Arno River in central Florence, and well-known spots in Rome such as the Forum, the Colosseum, Vatican City, and more.  

Former DVOW Finalist CG Films brings us this excellent drone video montage from Italy.  The video starts at Monte Civetta, a peak in the Dolomite Mountains in the northeastern part of the country, then heads to Lake Laceno in the southern region of Campania.  At the :27 mark, there's a marvelous shot of the ancient town of Matera in Basilicata, at the "ankle" of Italy.  Other featured locations include the beach of Torre dell'Orso in Apulia, the towns of Ascea and Felitto and Mt. Alburni in Campania, and the Pordoi Pass in the Dolomites.

Former Drone Video of the Week Finalist Rodowold brings us this excellent drone video from Italy.  The first part of the video was shot over the northern region of Lombardy, where you'll be treated to some aerial views of such wonders as Lake Como and the Italian Alps.  Then you'll head south to the Cinque Terre towns of the Italian Riviera.   The five towns, which lie in the province of La Spezia (part of the region of Liguria) along the Ligurian Sea, have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  

Explore Northern Italy from above in this excellent piece by former DVOW Finalist michael haubold.  The video was filmed across Lombardy, Trentino, and Veneto, three of Northern Italy's main regions.  At the :32 mark, there's a nice view of the ancient Verona Arena, followed by a shot of the Santa Maria della Salute church on the Grand Canal of Venice.  Other featured locations include various spots around Lake Garda (starting at the :40 mark), the Adige River in Verona (2:34), Venice's Piazza San Marco (3:25), and more.    

Prepare to be amazed by this drone reel from northern Italy, compliments of contributor and pilot info@coverphoto.it.  It was mostly shot in the Liguria region of Italy, sometimes called the Italian Riviera.  The reel contains a mix of action shots as well as some gorgeous aerials of the Ligurian coastline and boats plying the waters of the Ligurian Sea.  There's also some amazing shots of the coast of Genoa, the great Ligurian capital city and (famously) the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.

Cervina is one of the most popular ski areas in Italy.  It's at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Aosta Valley (Val d'Aosta) region in the northwestern part of the country, very near the Swiss border (the peak of the Matterhorn is in Switzerland but much of its base is in Italy).  It shares the great mountain with Zermatt, the better known ski resort which lies on the Swiss side of the Matterhorn.  In this video by contributor BrianCortinovis, you'll get a great bird's eye view of Cervinia in the warmer months.  

Italy's Pompeii Archaeological Park marks the site of one of the most well-documented events of the Antiquity: the destruction of the city of Pompeii when nearby Mt. Vesuvius catastrophically erupted in 79 AD.  The explosion buried the city and several surrounding towns under 4-6 meters (13-20 ft.) of volcanic ash, instantly killing all of its 10k+ inhabitants.  Located in the (southern) Campania region just outside of the city of Naples, the archaeological park can be seen from above in this drone video by mikyciancio.  

Explore three of Italy's most famous cities from above in this excellent drone video by My Travels.  The first stop is the Tuscan capital of Florence, opening with epic shots of the Florence Cathedral (Duomo), followed by Arnolfo Tower and the Ponte Vecchio Bridge.  At the 1:50 mark, you'll head south to Naples, where you'll see landmarks such as the Piazza del Plebiscito (2:08), the Castel Nuovo (2:20), and the Castel Sant'Elmo (2:45).  The last stop is Rome; here you'll see the Colosseum (3:40), St. Peter's Basilica (3:48), and more.  

See some of the famous sites of Italy in this excellent travel video by Alessio Tricaico, which combines drone (including FPV drone) footage and ground shots.  Starting at about the :25 mark, you'll see the Pantheon in Rome, which was built during the time of the Roman Empire and is topped by the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.  Then you'll head a few blocks northwest to see the Victor Emmanuel II Monument.  From there it's on to the Tuscan city of Florence to see Giotto's Campanile (1:01) and the adjacent Duomo (1:30).

Check out this excellent drone demo reel from Italy, compliments of top AirVuz contributor and pilot VideoVolando.  The video features a mix of landscape, urban, and action shots from across one of the world's most picturesque countries.  Locations range from the Dolomite Mountains in the Trentino Region to Castel dell'Ovo on the Bay of Naples.  Other highlights include shots of a jeep cruiding a mountain road, a speedboat running on a lake, a bright red Ferrari speeding through a snowstorm, horseback riding in the mountains, and more.  

The theme of this very creative drone video from Italy by top AirVuz contributor Marco Miele is water, and all the forms it takes.  Filmed with  variety of drones, the video opens with some waterfall shots, followed by flyovers of some mountain lakes (both frozen and unfrozen).  At about the :55 mark, there's a great shot of a snow-covered mountain peak, followed by a shot of a lighthouse sitting atop a tiny island.  You'll also see other forms of water, including clouds (made of water vapor), glaciers, and more.
