The city of Bologna is one of the cultural treasures of Italy. Capital of the region of Emilia Romagna, Bologna dates from the time of the Etruscans, the civilization which dominated much of central Italy prior to the rise of Rome. Located near the foothills of the Apennine Mountains, Bologna was one of the largest cities in Europe during the Middle Ages. Home of the world's oldest university, Bologna is instantly recognizable by its distinctive medieval towers and churches. Check out this collection of drone videos of this great city, the center of a metropolitan area of over a million in population. Check out this stunning DVOW nominated video from Bologna, Italy, compliments of Jackanda. Featuring stunning aerial footage of the city and its surrounding hills, the video was taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, when social distancing measures left the streets of the ancient Emilia-Romagna capital city virtually empty. The ER region, which covers much of north-central Italy, was particularly hard-hit during the pandemic; only the Piedmont and Lombardy regions recorded more infections and deaths.

The Italian city of Bologna is perhaps best architecturally distinguished by its two medieval towers, which you'll see in this drone video by Michele Ciancio. The taller of the two, Asinelli Tower, stands just under 320 ft. (about 97 m), while Garisenda Tower stands around 157 ft. or around 48 m. The towers are named after the two families which built them, by some accounts in competition with each other, in the early 12th century. Like the Tower of Pisa in Tuscany, both of Bologna's towers "lean" off of vertical.

It's called the Abbey of Monteveglio (Abbazia di Monteveglio Sanctuario), and it's located in the town of Valsamoggia just to the west of the great university city. The current structure dates to the 11th and 12th centuries, although the original monastery was likely considerably older. Originally built for the Augustinian order, it now houses Franciscan monks.

Ferrara is the capital of the eponymously named province, which lies in the northeast part of the region, on a branch of the Po River.

In this drone video by enricocif, you'll get a bird's eye view of the Parco della Abbadessa e Castello Machiavelli. The park sits in the hills outside of the city, in the heart of a series of large and distinctive granite outcrops.
