Originally 24 monasteries were built beginning in the 14th century atop immense stone pillars in the region of Thessaly; six of these remain: the monasteries of Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Saint Nicholas Anapausas, Rousanou, Holy Trinity, and Saint Stephen. . The area is considered second in importance only to the Holy Mountain of Athos in its importance to Eastern Orthodoxy.
