Founded in the 12th century as a fishing village on the banks of the Amstel River, Amsterdam is the Netherlands' largest city in terms of population and its most important city culturally and financially. Its name comes from Amstelredamme, a dam built on the Amstel River when it was first founded, which eventually became Amsterdam. Amsterdam has one of the most established urban fabrics in Europe, with buildings mostly dating from the 17th century. The old part of the city consists of intertwined crescent-shaped canals. Some of the historic houses on both sides of these canals are used as homes today, while the rest are used as public or private workplaces.
