A Cornish Winter Swell | Short Film | Storm Éowyn

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :

Multiple DVOW Finalist benhawkinsalive used a DJI Mavic Pro 3 to create this stunning aerial video of the coast of Cornwall, England.  The southwesternmost county of England, for centuries Cornwall has been synonymous with British seafaring culture.  The video was filmed during the course of a winter storm, for which the Cornish coast is also famous.  If you watch the slow-motion shots demonstrating the power of the waves crashing into the shoreline, you'll understand why Cornwall's coast has been the scene of thousands of shipwrecks.

A Cornish Winter Swell | Short Film | Storm Éowyn A short film in honour of the Cornish coastline’s vast wildlife and history, with the utmost responsibility for its natural environment and preservation. The power of the ocean and the dangers posed by the coastline and cliffs during high-force winds should not be underestimated and should only be experienced with caution and awareness. A Cornish Winter Swell is a short film primarily focused on storms. Eventually, I hope to expand it into a full-length film based on a true historical story about pirates in 15th-century Cornwall. I have an entire script ready and hope to secure funding. I am seeking support through BFI and BA Film. Please reach out if you can assist in this plan for a major project in Cornwall. I consider myself an expert drone storm chaser, as I have mastered many techniques to prevent flyaways. It is rare to see drone footage of storms because people are often too afraid to fly them in gale-force winds. I learned the hard way when I lost my Mavic 2 at Cape Cornwall six years ago. I had flown too far out of the cove and too high, and I was caught in a wind tunnel that prevented me from flying back to the home point. The wind was faster than the drone’s top speed, and I had to watch as it simply hovered in place until the battery died. Then, it was blown out to sea and crashed into the water. Now, I know when not to push the limits, how to follow the jet streams, and how to avoid flying against high-force winds—instead, I use them to enhance the footage. Crosswinds pose a threat to lateral flight, and signal interference can be severe in storms and rain.
