This range is one of several Carpathian sub-ranges which surround the Great Transylvania Plateau; the plateau and the mountains surrounding it together have historically defined the region. This sub-range, with its distinctive looking peaks, extends westward from Romania into Hungary and Slovakia. It is less continuous than the other ranges which surround Transylvania.
