Visit to Ponta da Ferraria

Our visit to Ponta da Ferraria begins with two aerial approaches. The first is on the west side, passing by the Ferraria Lighthouse, with Pico das Camarinhas on the left, while the second is on the east side.

As we descend to the fajã, we follow a challenging descent that winds down the slope.

The main attraction of this place is a small indentation in the coast, where geothermal water, coming from nearby springs, mixes with the sea, creating a pleasant temperature of approximately 39ºC, perfect for relaxing and dissipating any stress.

During storms, it is advisable to postpone the visit.

On the other hand, with the calm sea and during ebb and high tides, it is an excellent time for a relaxing swim.

If these conditions are not favorable, there is a swimming pool next to the Termas building, whose waters are also geothermally heated.

In addition, Ferraria offers stunning sunsets, which are another of its natural wonders.

Ponta da Ferraria is a lava fajã, located in the parish of Ginetes, municipality of Ponta Delgada, island of São Miguel, archipelago of the Azores.

This geological formation includes a promontory formed during volcanic eruptions that gave rise not only to the initial geological formation of the island, but also by recent volcanic manifestations that gave rise to new phenomena, such as a volcanic pseudocrater, a consequence of small explosions of steam, resulting from the contact of hot lava with sea water, leading to the existence of a thermal complex and natural pools.

Given their particular characteristics, Ponta da Ferraria and Pico das Camarinhas, nearby, were classified as Regional Natural Monument and Protected Landscape, within the scope of the Natura 2000 Network, under the name of: Regional Natural Monument of Pico das Camarinhas and Ponta da Ferraria.
