Virxe da Roca

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Top AirVuz contributor Airviewstudio brings us this excellent drone video of a well-known monument on the northwestern coast of Spain. It's called the Virgin of the Rock (Virxe da Rocha), and it's located atop a small mountain overlooking the town of Baiona in Pontevedra, one of the four provinces which make up the Galicia region in the northwestern corner of the country. The monument was completed in 1930, following a two decade contruction period. The monument stands about 50 ft. (15 m) high.

The Virgin of the Rock is one of the most famous monuments in the municipality of Baiona. This magnificent monument was built in stone, more specifically granite, on top of the rocks of Mount Sansón by the famous architect from Porriño, Antonio Palacios. The figure of the Virgin of the Rock was made of granite and provides a great contrast when compared to the softness and purity of the face, neck, face and hands, modeled in marble and the cross of the crown made of porcelain. At the bottom of the imposing image there is an altar and a stone cross. The construction is 15m high and at its northern end there is a door through which you can access the interior of the Virgin and the viewing point via a spiral staircase in which, as you go up, tiles appear containing the different verses that make up the Hail Mary and the prayer that culminates the Rosary. Once up there we reach the viewing boat from which we can appreciate in greater detail the face of the Virgin as well as her crown and the porcelain cross. The views from the viewing boat are magnificent and we recommend not missing the opportunity to go up.
