Vila Velha is one of the main cities of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, the smallest of the four states of Brazil's Southeast region.  It's part of the Greater Vitória metropolitan area, which is home to most of this highly urbanized state's residents.  Vila Velha lies on the south side of Vitória Bay from the larger city; the bay is actually the estuary of the Vitória River. Vila Velha is the state's oldest city, having been founded by the Portuguese explorer Vasco Fernandes Coutinho in 1535.
