While most of Bacău County lies in the northeastern region of Moldavia, Ghimeș-Făget is part of the historical region of Transylvania just to the west. The town lies along the slopes of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, which form the eastern boundary of Transylvania and prior to World War I the border between Romania and Austria Hungary.
