Takamaka Belvedere,
A breathtaking view! The Takamaka Valley deeply lacerates the eastern plane of the Piton des Neiges massif. It imprints the landscape with its steep ramparts, thus enclosing one of the longest rivers on the island, the Rivière des Marsouins.Extending, in a setting of waterfalls, the Bébour plateau, the valley drains the water soaking upstream the mountain forests, rich in remarkable biodiversity. The small road that goes up it opens at its terminus onto a panorama of great nature, an integral part of the heart of the national park and the World Heritage Site. The omnipresent water is captured to produce electricity. It supplies two power plants made invisible, by an astonishing underground installation, imposed by the very rugged relief. It is therefore recommended to find out about the weather and prefectural orders, to be equipped for hiking without forgetting water, a cap and a blanket before going there.Takamaka, an asset for the energy transitionWhen it was commissioned, Takamaka I generated 78 million KWh, or 85% of Reunion Island's electricity production.Today, the hydroelectric energy produced by the Takamaka I and II power plants supplies the equivalent of 35,000 homes. It is the island's leading renewable energy source. Tomorrow, Takamaka will always be at the forefront thanks to investment programs worth several million euros. Hydraulic energy is a lasting asset for the territory and confirms the visionary nature of this direction taken in 1964.
