At one point in history, one of the most heavily fortified borders was that which existed between France and Spain.  Ultil the border was moved to the crest of the Pyrenees Mountains via a treat established in the middle of the 17th century, the border lay on the northern (French) side of the chain, causing the French to build numerous forts to protect the most vulnerable arrangement routes.  In this drone video by SKYDRONAUTS, you'll see one of these fortifications: Fort de Salses, which was built in the 15th century.
