The Liberty Statue of Freedom Statue is a monument on the Gallert Hill in Budapest, Hungary. Opened in 1947 it was created to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the independence and prosperity of the country. Erected at the end of World War II after the Soviet liberation of the country from Nazi Germany (which invaded Hungary following its attempt to switch sides), the statue used to have verbiage in Russian that has since been removed.
