Solingen is one of the largest cities in a region known as Bergisches Land, which is a hilly area in the state of North-Rhine-Westphalia in Western Germany.  For centuries, the city has been closely associated with the manufacturing of steel blades - everything from swords in medieval times to advanced shaving blades in modern times.  The City of Blades is situated on the Whipper River, a major tributary of the mighty Rhine River.  The old city was heavily damaged by an Allied bombing raid in World War II.
