O Courel is the great green reserve of Galicia. All species, except those from the coast, are represented in this geographical crossroads of mountains, with the best of the Atlantic and Mediterranean characteristics. Chestnut trees surround the villages and a stronghold of olive trees in Quiroga. The typical forest formations of O Courel are the dehesas, a name used to refer to forests of many other plant species, generally at the headwaters of rivers. The sparse population of these places, where the provinces of Lugo and Ourense meet with the Leonese region of El Bierzo, is currently one of the oldest in Europe. But life breathes true diversity and history in the narrow valleys of the rivers Lor and Lóuzara, Selmo and Sondón. On the green slopes you can discover that other heritage of O Courel: its slate villages, the heart of the mountain range. From Romeor to Froxán and from A Ferrería to Ferramulín, the four cardinal points.
