The Salinas de Rio Maior are a group of traditional salt pans located in the village of Fonte da Bica, Rio Maior, Portugal. They have been in operation since at least the 12th century, and are thought to have been used even earlier. The salt pans are fed by a natural spring of saltwater, which is seven times saltier than seawater. The water is evaporated in a series of basins, leaving behind salt crystals that are then collected and packaged.
