The town of Royan is located on the right (northern) bank of the estuary of the Gironde River near its mouth, in the Charente-Maritime Department. With five (5) five beaches and a large marina, it's one of the most popular seaside resort towns in western France. The town was heavily bombed during the closing months of World War II, when it became one of the last German strongholds in France.
