The core of the structure dates to the 10th century. It is situated in the Province of L'Aquila, which is near the geographic center of Italy. The fortification sits at an altitude of just under 1.5k meters (a little under 5k ft), making it the highest fortress in the Apennine range which runs through the middle of the "boot" of Italy.
