Ribeira Sacra |Monasteries, Rivers, Mountains, Serenity
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
In this drone video by AirVuz contributor Airviewstudio, you'll get an aerial tour of the Ribeira Sacra, a culturally important area within the Galicia region of northwestern Spain. The Ribeira Sacra is home to a dense cluster of monasteries along the Cabe , Sil, and Miño Rivers in Ourense and Lugo, two of the four provinces which make up the autonomous community of Galicia. The densest cluster of standing monasteries in Europe, some of them date to the 12th century AD and possibly earlier.

Legend has it that the God Jupiter fell in love with Galicia for its beauty and gave him the Miño River as a gift seeking his love, but his wife Juno felt so jealous that she decided to cut Galicia with a sword to make it uglier. These cuts are the canyons of the Miño and Sil rivers in Ribeira Sacra. Jupiter, very angry, punished her wife and she was condemned to wander in the same foothills that she did in the cut. Jupiter soon forgives his wife and they meet again in the heart of Ribeira Sacra, Os Peares (very close to ABA SOLLEIRA), where the Sil and Bubal rivers meet the Miño river and the three begin to flow together. Galicia is a land so beautiful that even the wife of a God felt jealous of it and thanks to her reaction of fury when cutting the land, the canyons in the Miño and Sil rivers were born, in reality the steep slopes that provide soil for the vines. nowadays.First reference to RIBEIRA SACRAThe first historical reference to Ribeira Sacra was found in the Monastery of Montederramo in the 12th century where Teresa of Portugal writes "Rivoyra Sacrata" in reference to this land, probably related to the high density of monasteries and which means "sacred shore".Before the Romans, Galicia was populated by the Celts and these roots are still found in many cultural aspects today such as music (bagpipes), traditions, legends... The Celts worshiped the Sun and today we still do so in ABA SOLLEIRA which means in Galician “Ladera Soleada” and simply shows the importance of sun exposure of the vineyards in these Atlantic climatic conditions.RIBEIRA SACRA and the Roman EmpireThe Romans settled in Galicia, in fact, they considered this Atlantic coast “Finis Terrae” (the end of the earth). In those times in Galicia, the mining industry was really important. One of the most important references in the main city of the province of Ribeira Sacra, Ourense (name that comes from the Latin word "aurum", which means gold). In the Ribeira Sacra region, the foothills of the canyon are full of terraces, the oldest of which were made in Roman times and the oldest signs of viticulture date back to the 1st century, 2000 years ago.Galicia, a region full of myths and legends, was also an important area during the Middle Ages, especially for its links with Christianity, the most important being the tomb of the apostle Santiago, which has always been a pilgrimage destination. The Ribeira Sacra region is famous for being the region with the highest concentration of monasteries in Europe and its artistic importance as unique examples of Romanesque art. The oldest is San Pedro de Rocas, founded in the year 573, one of the oldest in Europe. The most important is Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, founded during the 6th century and finally rebuilt in 909.In this video I show it to you from different places, the Duque viewpoint , the Peña del Castillo viewpoint, the Souto Chao viewpoint with the carreteiro sculpture that represents a carreteiro carrying a basket of grapes on his head, created by the sculptor Manuel Rial honors the effort in heroic viticulture and the pier of the Lugo provincial council. As soon as we crossed the river we entered the province of Ourense, visiting the As penas de Matacas viewpoint, the town of Castro Caldelas, the Santo Estevo Monastery of Rivas de Sil, the As peñas do Castro viewpoint and the O Bambán swing. do Solpor
