One of the highest massifs in all of Romania, the Retezat Mountains are part of the Southern Carpathian Mountains. Translating to “cut-off” in Romanian, the highest mountain in the sub-range is Mt. Peleaga, which has a peak altitude of 2.5k meters or just over 8.2k ft. above sea level. The area is also home to Retezat National Park, the first national park in Romania. The Retezat Mountains are one of the highest massifs in Romania, being part of the Southern Carpathians. The highest peak is Peleaga, at an altitude of 2,509 metres (8,232 ft).
