The Romanticist style landmark is lcoated in the hills of the Sintra province, a short drive northwest of Lisbon. Completed on the site of a ruined medieval monastery in 1854, it was built as a summer residence for the Portuguese Royal Family. It is widely considered to be one of the top half-dozen castles in Europe and one of Portugal's top cultural attractions.
