The state is considered one of Mexico's great cultural treasures because of its indigenous population, in which at least 16 pre-Columbian tribes have survived and with greater continuity than in other parts of the country. Located in a mountain valley, Oaxaca was the subject of four of the eight essays in DH Lawrence's travel book Mornings in Mexico (1927).
