It is considered the main entrance and exit of Greece (through Promahonas station border) which is crossed by the national road E79. On the north, there is the mountain range of Kerkini or Belles which is the natural border between Greece and Bulgaria. The County is divided by the river Strimonas which enters the Greek soil through Bulgaria, heading south to the Strimonikos cove and the Aegean Sea. The Kerkini Lake, apart from the fact that it is considered to be a very rare wetland, is the main water supplier for the valley of Serres during the summer months. The capital of the Municipality of Sintiki is Sidirokastro.
