Nigardsbreen (Glacier), Jostedalsbreen National Park, Norway
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Check out this stunning 4k drone video of a well-known glacier in Western Norway, compliments of contributor and pilot Allan Crawford. It's the Nigard Glacier (Nigardsbreen), and it's located in Sogn og Fjordane County. It currently covers just under 50 square km (just under 20 square mi.) Nigardsbreen is an arm of the Jostedal Glacier (Jostedalsbreen), Europe's largest. The glacier is named after a farm that was enveloped by the glacier during a period of expansion in the 18th century.

20,000 years ago the Norwegian Peninsula was covered by an icecap over 3 km thick that carved the wonderous fjords of western Norway. Today about 2,500 glaciers remain in Norway...with the largest being the Jostedalen Glacial Complex. One of the offshoots of the main glacier is Nigards Glacier...or Nigardsbreen. Nigards glacier (named for a family farm that was overrun when the glacier advanced nearly 4 km in the 1700's) is readily accessible, with a relatively easy walk to it's toe. It's even possible to arrange a guided hike with crampons and ice axes. Of course...it's not just the glacier that is spectacular...you have to check out the magnificent waterfalls and rivers as well. The wonders of Norway....
