The Creux du Van cliffs are located in the canton of Neuchâtel, west of the canton's namesake capital and not far from the French border. The cliffs were created by the unusual erosional patterns to be found here, in the transition zone between the Swiss Plateau (which covers the middle part of Switzerland, north of the Alps) and the Jura Mountains to its north.
