The commune is situated overlooking a canyon of the Nera River in the province of Ternia in Umbria. Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, Narni was known as Narnia during the Roman period, when it was seen as an important strategic outpost. In the 20th century, British author C.S. Lewis used the town's Roman name for an imaginary land immortalized in his Chronicles of Narnia series (1950-56).
