The lighthouse is located on a promontory in County Clare on the island's southwestern coast. Situated in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way, Loop Head was named the Best Place to Holiday in Ireland by the Irish Times in 2013. Loop Head was used as a filming location for the 2017 blockbuster Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.
