Of the 700 islands which make up the archipelago nation of the Bahamas, Long Island is frequently considered the most naturally beautiful.  The island lies about 265 km (around 165 mi.) southeast of Nassau, in its own district.  Long Island is about 130 km (about 80 mi.) long but extremely narrow - only 6 km (around 4 mi.) at its widest point.  Some historians believe that Long Island was the third island visited by Christopher Columbus in his first trip to the "New World", although this is not universally accepted.
