It's the capital of Vaud, the westernmost Canton of this Central European country. Switzerland's fourth-largest city after Zurich, Geneva, and Basle, Lausanne lies near the northernmost point of Lake Geneva ( Léman), the great lake which partially serves as the French-Swiss border. Lausanne dates to Roman times, and is home to about four-dozen Swiss heritage sites.
