Lake Shikotsu Morappu Campsite, Hokkaido Japan

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Check out this beautiful drone video from a crater lake in northern Japan, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Return to Base. Lake Shikotsu is located in the city of Chitose, on the southern side of the island of Hokkaido. The lake covers a surface area of 78 square km (around 30 square mi.), making it the country's 8th-largest on that measure. With a maximum depth of 363 meters (almost 1.2k ft.), it's Japan's second-deepest lake. Despite its northerly location, the lake remains ice-free throughout the year.

Lake Shikotsu in Chitose, Hokkaido is a caldera lake formed by the accumulation of water in the depression created by the eruption of Shikotsu volcano about 40,000 years ago. The clear water of Lake Shikotsu, which boasts this transparency and water quality, is illuminated by light and is called "Lake Shikotsu Blue". It gives off the so-called blue glow.
