The mountains form part of a range called the Northern Limestone Alps, itself part of the great Alps system of Central and Western Europe. The Karwendels are shared between Germany (specifically, the southern state of Bavaria) and the western Austrian state of Tyrol. Their highest peak, Mt. Birkkarspitze, has an elevation of just over 2.7k meters (just over 9k ft.) above sea level.
