The village sits on the Bahorok River, which flows eastward through the province before discharging into the Malacca Strait. Bukit Lawang is home to the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan, and also the main eastern access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park. The area has become one of Indonesia's top eco-tourism destinations.
