Ireland is one of the most spectacular places in the world to see from above. It is an island off the north Atlantic ocean separated from Great Britain by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George’s Channel. The country is known for its rocky cliffs, ancient and historic castles, and rolling, green hills. Ironically, before the Middle Ages the island was mostly woodland. However, now only 10% of the island is woodland. Humans have been in Ireland is around 10,500BC or 12,500 years ago. The patron Saint of Ireland is Saint Patrick. He is considered the founder of Christianity on the Island. According to his “Confessio,” when he was about 16 he was captured by Irish pirates and was taken as a slave to the island. He escaped after 6 years and returned home to become a cleric. Later in life, he would come back to Ireland to preach the gospel. Nowadays, Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated every March 17th, Patrick’s death day, by millions of people around the world. Croagh Patrick in County Mayo is one of the most famous sites in Ireland that the patron saint is said to have visited. See more aerial views of Ireland in our Ireland by Drone Collection.
