The capital of Heilongjiang (China's northernmost province), Harbin was only founded as a city in 1898, with the coming of the (Russian-built) Chinese Eastern Railway. It served as the largest city in the Japanese-controlled "puppet" state of Manchukuo during World War II, and emerged as one of China's leading industrial centers following the victory of the Chinese Communists in 1949.
