Once an oddity known mostly to locals, the rock was immportalized in the 1965 novel Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsey. The book tells the story of a group of schoolgirls who visit the rock on Valentine's Day in 1900 and vanish. Later adapted to a screenplay for a 1975 movie of the same name, it's considered one of the greatest novels to come from Australia.

I hope you are having a relaxing week. I have been meaning to film Hanging Rock however it has always been so busy as it is a very popular tourist spot. So yesterday I got up early to be there by 6am to capture the sunrise and well before the families and tourists arrive. Hanging Rock (also called Mount Diogenes) is a 1 hour drive from Melbourne and is a rare volcanic formation, one of the best examples of a volcanic plug or mamelon in the world. It is 6 million years old and has been exposed to considerable weathering and erosion, resulting in a conglomeration of unusual rock formations. It has sacred aboriginal significance and was made famous from a book and movie called Picnic at Hanging Rock. If you get the chance then definitely check out this incredible rock formation.
