Espírito Santo is a largely coastal state, one of the four which make up Brazil's Southeast region. Its capital city is on an island in Vitória's Bay, an estuary formed by several of the region's rivers. The center of a metropolitan area of about two million, Vitória was founded by the Portuguese in the 1500's and is one of the country's wealthiest cities.
