The crazily-shaped Sumbawa is part of a chain known as the Lesser Sunda Islands which run across the southern part of the great archipelago. It's part of the West Nusa Tengarra region, which includes the better-known island of Lombok to its west. While Lombok is the most populous island of West Nusa, Sumbawa is actually considerably larger area-wise; it covers a land area of just over 15k square km, or just under 6k square mi.
