The city was the capital of the Republic of Ragusa in the late Medieval and Early Modern period, when it was one of the most important city-states in the eastern Mediterranean region. Thanks in part to its extensive appearances in HBO's Game of Thrones series, Dubrovnik is now one of the top destinations anywhere in Southeastern Europe.
