Drone Video of Extreme Lake Superior Surfers

Published 03/20/2019 08:19
A drone pilot captured big wave surfers far from any ocean's coast. Brave surfers battle the elements to "hang ten" along the shores of Lake Superior in the dead of winter.

Pilot and producer Jay Christensen of Fit Lam Studios captured the action with his DJI Inspire 2 drone. Near Duluth, Minnesota, the dedicated surfers endure air temps below freezing and water temperatures around 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Surprisingly, the waves during this time of year are not just rideable but also high quality. To protect from the elements, surfers wear full body wetsuits but inevitably they will face icicle-drenched hair and beards.

Locals have affectionately adopted the sport as a sign of their northern roots, Avid surfers will travel to the area from afar to test their physical endurance or in search of an 'exotic' surf spot, and others have tested the waters just to obtain the ever-sought-after epic social media photo. These athletes prove that no length is too far to go to ride the perfect wave, regardless of the location.
